The main camera, the tele as well as the (digital) 2x zoom do not receive top scores, but consistently earn the grade “very good”. Only the super wide angle lens performs a little weaker. Considering the price, the Honor is an attractive option for photographers for which the top models are just too expensive.

Wide angle (main camera) – 1.4/4.66 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 26 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 or 48 MP

The sensor of the wide angle camera can take JPTG images with a resolution of both 48 MP as well as 12 MP. At bright light, the 48 MP JPEGS offer the higher visual resolution, but in the 12 MP images, we measure the better Dead Leaves values on colored structures. With decreasing light, the advance of the 12 MP images increases. They then lead in terms of visual resolution and Dear Leaves. Also, the edges are less enhanced, which makes the 12 MP images look more natural overall, offering more details and less artefacts. When taking night shots, these tendencies grow. All in all, the wide angle camera offers a convincing performance, still it does not totally reach the level of the top devices. Our assessment is based on the overall higher score sum of the 12 MP solution.

Normal focal length – 1.4/4.66 mm lens

Also when used as a digital 2x zoom, the wide angle achieves a very good result. However, the images look modulated harder – the edges are distinctly enhanced, colors and contrast clearly increased. Thus, the images look crisper at first view – but they do not really feature more details.

Tele lens – 2.4/7.48 mm

(35mm equivalent: 80 mm), 8 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

The tele sensor works with 8 megapixels, but Honor scales the images up to 12 megapixels. When compared to photos from the Huawei P40 which features similar technical data, the weaker results of the Honor regarding resolution and Dead Leaves are eye-catching. Only at very low light, the measurement values converge on a very low level. However, Honor does not modulate the tele images quite as hard as Huawei.

Super wide angle – 2.2/2.23 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 16 mm), 16 MP sensor, JPEG with 16 MP

The super wide angle module is less convincing. In spite of its 16 MP resolution, the gap regarding resolution and Dead Leaves to the wide angle lens is distinct. This is amended by a faster decreasing quality in lower light situations. The super wide angle camera is only suitable for taking photos in bright light.
