The P40 Pro+ offers an outstanding feature set with two high-resolution cameras for wide angle and super wide angle images as well as two tele lenes with 80 and 240 mm focal length (35mm equivalents). No other smartphone covers such a wide zoom range with real cameras. Still, in our test the Pro+ showed some surprising weaknesses. Surprising, because we have often tested the same camera module in Huawei smartphones with better results. Maybe, the firmware in our very early test device was not optimally adjusted yet.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.9/6.71 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 23 mm), 50 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 or 50 MP
The P40 Pro+ has inherited the 50 megapixel wide angle camera from the P40 Pro. As usual, the photographer can choose between full resolution – our recommendation for bright light – or an image scaled down to 12 MP. We recommend 12 MP in lower light situations. However, the JPEGs do not offer the top image quality of the P40 Pro or the P40: Sharpness and details are both somewhat lacking. This is true for all levels of lighting. The main camera is still a very good wide angle system, but the module is capable of more. Our assessment is based on the higher point sum of the 12 MP solution.
Normal focal length – 1.9/6.71 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 46 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
The 2x zoom, a digital zoom based on the main camera, scores also worse in the P40 Pro+ than the same camera in the P40/P40 Pro. The result is not bad, but it could still be better.
Tele lens – 2.4/7.48 mm
(35mm equivalent: 80 mm), 8 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
The first of the two tele cameras seems to originate from the P40 – the optical specifications and the resolution are identical. The 8 MP sensor is upscaled to 12 megapixels. Once again, the results of the Pro+ cannot quite match the measurement values of the sister model. Especially in deteriorating light, the camera in the Pro+ has to give up earlier.
The second tele lens with a 4,27/28,21 mm focal length (real 25 mm equivalent: 240 mm, for JPEG without RAW cropped to 269 mm) and a 8 MP sensor delivers a much better image quality than the digital zoom solutions of the competition in this focal length range. Still, the 80 mm unit achieves better measurement values and thus is considered in the scoring.
Super wide angle – 1.8/4.4 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 18 mm), 40 MP sensor, JPEG with 10 MP
The super wide angle lens is also inherited from the P40 Pro and it also performs like in the P40 Pro. The useable resolution stays at 10 MP – the camera calculates the 10 MP JPEGs in the background from the 40 MP of the sensor using the pixel binning method. The camera delivers beautiful details in sufficient lighting and is able to hold up this performance level quite long.
