The Nokia 7.2 has only little to offer to photographers – its wide angle camera works still good at full viewing angle. But as a substitute for a normal focal length it is, much the same as the super wide angle module, no winner of this photo test. This comparably heavily limits the options for photographers. Also, a partly very strong enhancement of edges is noticeable.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.8/4.71 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 26 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 or 48 MP
The same as the Honor 20 Pro, also the Nokia 7.2 offers a wide angle camera, which can take photos alternatively with 48 or 12 megapixels. In bright light, we recommend the maximum resolution, because then the camera con convert the higher pixel count into finer detailed structures. However, the 48 MP images show visible artefacts even at a high amount of light. In bright light, the Nokia scores a little weaker then the Honor 20 Pro – the more aggressive re-sharpening of the Nokia leads to a loss of points. As is often the case, in decreasing light, the 12 MP JPEGs are the better option, because they are more neatly calculated with a comparable degree of details. At night, Nokias wide angle camera is hardly useable – too many structures are damaged. Our assessment is based on the higher sum of points reached by the 12 MP solution.
Normal focal length – 1.8/4.71 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 52 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
The Nokia offers a 2x zoom only as a digital option. Then, the wide angle camera crops the sensor section and produces JPEGs with a resolution of 12 MPs. The loss in quality in considerable: The resolution and Dead Leaves results significantly sink compared to the wide angle setting, slushing especially finer structures. At the same time, the artefacts increase. Edges are computed very aggressively by Nokia in this mode. In very dark environments, the image quality once more decreases heavily. All in all: The user should better not use the Nokia 7.2’s zoom.
Super wide angle – 2.2/1.6 mm LENS
(35mm equivalent: 13 mm), 8 MP sensor, JPEG with 8 MP
The super wide angle module scores better, but still this camera does not receive a recommendation. The 8 MP sensor delivers comparably low-detail images even in bright light. When the stream of photos decreases, the quality deteriorates very quickly. In dark situations, the motives are hardly recognizable. At least, the super wide angle module does not compute edges as aggressively as the digital 2x zoom.
