Two cameras – wide angle and super wide angle – are not much nowadays. Still, both modules are convincing. They do not deliver top results, but still are sufficient for the grade “very good” – at least in bright light. When it becomes darker, both cameras perform somewhat weaker.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.8/4.74 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 26 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 or 48 MP
As in its Pro model, OnePlus also uses a 48 MP wide angle camera in the 8, which can calculate also 12 MP by pixel binning. But the OnePlus 8 has a smaller sensor and a different lens. A score shotout with the Pro is clearly forfeited by the 8. Albeit, the camera offers a good performance. With a high amount of light, the 12 MP and 48 MP JPEGs rank closely together. The latter are modulated a little softer, but the representation of details is almost on the same level. With less light, the 12 MP images are the better choice. In bright light, the camera performs almost as good as the iPhone 11 or Google Pixel 4. In lower light situations, the images are still clear and of low noise, but lack fine structures in some parts. At night, the images turn out too dark and lack additional details, but they are still useable and comparably free of noise and artefacts. Our assessment is based on the higher overall score of the 12 MP solution.
Normal focal length – 1.8/4.74 mm lens

In lack of a tele lens, the main camera of the OnePlus 8 uses a digital zoom. The 2x digital zoom however loses image quality. Even in bright light, the loss in details, which is proven by the lower Dead Leaves values, is complemented by a rise in artefacts. Huawei does an overall better job in realizing a 2x digital zoom – but still the One Plus 8 is among the best candidates of this assessment.
Super wide angle – 2.2/2.25 mm LENS
(35mm equivalent: 14 mm), 16 MP sensor, JPEG with 16 MP
The 16 MP super wide angle unit is less useable at night, but otherwise offers a neat performance. It does not rank at the very top, but still is among the better models. At bright light, the JPEGs are modulated unnecessary hard and exaggeratingly re-sharpened, but all in all the result is okay. At dawn, there are a lot of artefacts entering the images – the imaging quality then sinks to an “okay” level.
