The Oneplus 9 cannot quite keep up with the 9 Pro. Partly because it degrades more in low light, partly because it lacks a telephoto. Nevertheless, both the wide-angle and super-wide-angle modules are good cameras, albeit with weaknesses in low light.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.9/6.1 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 23 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 48 or 12 MP
The main camera leaves the choice between 48 and 12 megapixels. Unlike the Oneplus 9 Pro, the pictures with 12 MP show an overall better picture quality. The 12 MP quality of the 9 Pro and 9 models is very similar in high light. However, the 9 Pro has the lead when the maximum resolution is selected. The Oneplus 9 also shows the resolution advantages of the 48 MP sensor in high light (5000 lux), but it reproduces fine structures with low contrasts less well than the 9 Pro. The 12 MP JPEGs are clearly ahead in diminishing light (200 lux): The resolution drops in decreasing light and the edges become softer. The night pictures (5 lux) are acceptable, but their quality again does not reach that of the 9 Pro.
Normal focal length – 1.9/6.1 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 46 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
Since a telephoto module is missing, the wide-angle camera is responsible for all zoom shots. The normal focal length of the Oneplus 9 surprisingly works better than that of the 9 Pro - but it is not a replacement for its telephoto module. The image quality of the normal focal length is only convincing in a lot of light; the pictures are already less usable at 200 lux. Super wide angle – 2.2/3.5 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 14 mm), 50 MP sensor, JPEG with 50 OR 12 MP
We rather advise against taking 50 MP JPEGs, because even in bright light they have little quality advantage over 12 MP images and do not reach the level of the 50 MP photos from the 9 Pro. The12 MP JPEGs are also slightly worse than those of the 9 Pro at all three brightness levels. However, the performance is good compared to the competition.
