The wide-angle camera delivers good results in a lot of light and at maximum resolution. If the light fades, you should work with 12 megapixels - and even then, both test candidates only deliver mediocre results. Neither the normal focal length nor the super-wide angle are convincing.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.8/4.6 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 26 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 48 or 12 MP
The wide-angle camera of the Samsung A32 works with a 48 megapixel sensor and shoots with the maximum or a reduced resolution of 12 megapixels. Our rating is based on the latter. However, it is worth switching to the maximum resolution in high light (5000 lux), because you get more detailed pictures. Even at light twilight (200 lux), the 12 MP JPEGs work their way forward, but the image quality still visibly decreases. The pictures of both test candidates lose even more detail in the dark, and their quality drops to a comparatively low level. Overall, the wide-angle module is okay, but there are many better ones.
Normal focal length – 1.8/4.6 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 52 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
Without a dedicated telephoto camera, Samsung zooms in with the main camera. The 12 MP JPEGs are decidedly low in detail even in the most favorable lighting conditions and degrade all the more as the light fades. The bottom line is that zooming with the wide-angle module is not very advisable.
Super wide angle – 2.2/1.4 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 13 mm), 8 MP sensor, JPEG with 8 MP
The resolution of 8 megapixels is not enough for a competitive super wide-angle camera and limits the usefulness significantly. Both models already shoot quite low-detail pictures in a lot of light. As the light fades, the image quality deteriorates further. click to enlarge
