Only the main camera of the Note 20 Ultra achieves relevant scores, the ultra wide angle and tele lens cannot surpass the grade “good”. The best impression is made by the tele lens at bright light.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.8/7 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 26 mm), 108 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 or 108 MP
The note combines every nine Pixels of the 108 MP sensor by using pixel binning. The resulting 12 MP images are the better choice in most of the cases and therefore the basis of our assessment. Only with a lot of light and favorable structures, the 108 MP JPEGs offer a slight advantage. The high Dead Leaves values and also the heavy increasing of edges are eye-catching. This camera is among the best, but not at the very top. Xiaomi reads out its 108 MP sensor at 27 MP, which is more clever and benefits the reproduction of detailed structures.
Normal focal length – 1.8/7 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 52 mm), 108 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
The main camera also serves as a 2x zoom – of course digital. Considering the very high sensor resolution, we would have expected somewhat better results. But the 12 MP JPEGs considerably lack in detail compared to the wide angle images over all exposure levels. The Dead Leaves and resolution values are far too low. Thus, either the signal processing does not do a good job, or the nine pixel binning provides an unsuitable data source.
Tele lens – 3/14.2 mm
(35mm equivalent: 125 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
The reproduction quality is good at bright light. The camera is a little more noisy than the P40 Pro’s tele lens, on the other hand the JPEG modulation partially looks a little more natural. At lower lighting, the tele module must quite soon increase its sensitivity, as the lens only offers an aperture of 3.0. This increases noise and costs fine details, but overall stays useable. At night, the Ultra changes to the wide angle camera and digitally zooms into the image. The result is hardly viable.
Super wide angle – 2.2/2.2 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 13 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
The super wide angle JPEGS lack details, the Dead Leaves results are surprisingly low. Even in bright light, the images are accordingly blurred – quite different to the S20 Plus, which applies too much sharpness to the images.
