The Sony Xperia 1 II scores with its very good camera app and high-performance autofocus functionality. The image quality is good, partially even very good – but still not yet on the same level as the absolute top devices.

Wide angle (main camera) – 1.7/5.11 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 27 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

Sony relies on a large sensor with only 12 MP, in order to optimize area and sensitivity. This concept is not totally working, as a look at the Pixel 4 demonstrates. Worse Dead Leaves values and the stronger emphasized edges cost points. With its intervention, Sony keeps the noise lower than Google, but the images look poorer in details. In areas with fine, but more low-contrast structures, this leads to losses in the image, which increase with dwindling light. In night shots, the images look almost blurred – but also feature relatively low noise.

Normal focal length – 1.7/5.11 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 52 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

As a digital 2x zoom, the main camera cannot be recommended. As the sensor delivers 12 MP, the data source for upscaling is too small, which leads to rather low values for resolution and Dead Leaves. Thus, the results do not succeed in scoring even in bright light.

Tele lens – 2.4/6.95 mm

(35mm equivalent: 70 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

The tele module does a better job, however it does not totally reach the quality level of the wide angle camera. We would wish for better Dead Leaves values and thus a better representation of fine structures. A positive observation is the less aggressive edge processing. If the motives permit – such as for example portraits – the tele module should be used. But only if the light is bright enough. The tele shows little resistance against darkness and degrades quickly when the light decreases.

Super wide angle – 2.2/2.67 mm

(35mm equivalent: 16 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

The super wide angle shows better resolution and Dead Leaves results, but also a heavier edge enhancement. This looks crispy, but somewhat overshoots the mark. We find it surprising that Sony puts the signal processing of the super wide angle kind of upside down in comparison to the tele lens.
