The Mi11 Ultra is one of the few smartphones that use high-resolution sensors not only for the wide-angle and super-wide-angle cameras, but also for the telephoto. Can the telephoto thus mobilize additional reserves for zooming? The Xiaomi Mi11 Ultra earns a high positioning in the qb benchmark. The wide-angle impresses with the very good image quality of the 50MP shots, which also maintain the level quite well in fading light. The telephoto camera offers a large zoom factor and good image quality in high light. The super-wide-angle is also fully convincing in good light and still okay in light twilight.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.9/7.6 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 24 mm), 50 MP sensor, JPEG with 50 or 12 MP
The wide-angle module of the Xiaomi Mi11 Ultra pleases with a very good image quality. Both the 12MP and 50MP JPEGs score high and climb to a top position in the qb chart for this wide-angle. The 50MP photos are ahead in total and convince not only in a lot of light, but also in low light, which is not a matter of course for high MP shots.
In a lot of light (5000 lux), the fine drawing is very good. The Samsung S21 with its also very good 64MP wide-angle camera can still extract a bit more details in a lot of light, but it is outperformed by the Xiaomi in diminishing light (200 lux). The Mi11 Ultra maintains the image quality quite well even in fading light for such a high resolution. Even at night (5 Lux), the fine detail decreases comparatively moderately, the noise remains on a tolerable level, and the structures are little alienated by the artifacts.
The 12MP resolution shots also deliver a high level of image quality in a lot of light and also at night. So, if you want to save storage space, you can also switch to the reduced resolution - admittedly, you won't get the maximum out of the wide-angle module anymore this way. No matter if 12 or 50 megapixels - Xiaomi adjusts the JPEGs crisply.
Normal focal length – 1.9/7,6 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 48 mm), 50 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
At smaller zoom levels up to a factor of 5x, the Mi11 Ultra zooms in with the wide-angle module, which then reduces the sensor data to 12 megapixels. The fine detail is below the level of the wide-angle, even when comparing 12MP to 12 MP, as long as the subjects are imaged in the same size. In bright light, the dual zoom can still be an option: if you don't change the location, then you shoot with a smaller angle of view, image the subjects larger, and get roughly comparable image quality. However, as the light fades (200 lux), the image quality declines to the point that we no longer recommend digital zooming - instead, it's better to stick with the wide angle.
Tele lens – 4.1/22 mm
(35mm equivalent: 120 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 48 OR 12 MP
The Mi11 Ultra is the first smartphone with a tele that offers a choice between 48 and 12 megapixels in terms of image resolution. Overall, the JPEGs with the reduced resolution win because they degrade less when the light fades. However, the 48MP JPEGs deliver more details in high light. The signal processing leaves noise in the image even then - it is visible, but not annoying. The 12MP JPEGs have more denoising - at the expense of fine details.
If the light is sufficient and the location is not changed, the telephoto shows its advantages: the 5x optical zoom brings the details close and draws them well. However, as long as you image the subjects at the same size from different distances, i.e. in absolute terms, the image quality is lower than with the wide-angle module: The telephoto sensor is smaller and the optics are slower, so the tele has poorer light output and has to increase sensitivity earlier.
As the light fades, the tele degrades greatly: this affects both the 12MP reduced and 50MP shots. The detail decreases to such an extent that the telephoto delivers few usable images in low light (200 lux) and no usable images at night (5 lux).
However, thanks to good performance in high light for a tele, this module scores high on balance compared to the competition.
Super wide angle – 2.2/2.27 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 12 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 48 OR 12 MP
