We often encounter the 48MP wide-angle module and it usually leaves a good impression - so does the Xiaomi Poco F3 5G, as long as you shoot with the full angle of view. The module is less recommendable as a 2x zoom. The super-wide-angle is okay in bright light.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.79/4.7 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 26 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 48 or 12 MP
The wide-angle module can shoot with 12 (4-in-1 binning) or 48 megapixels. At Poco, the 12MP images win in total. We generally recommend sticking with the reduced 12MP, since the 48MP JPEGs offer very little resolution advantage even in high light.
No matter the resolution, the wide-angle camera tunes the photos quite aggressively - the 12s even a bit more forcefully. This is all the more noticeable compared to the Sony 10 III and its gentler signal tuning. However, Poco is able to reproduce subjects with more detail than Sony and degrades less in fading light. At night, its shots are still okay. The bottom line is that the Poco F3 5G with its wide-angle camera shows the typical performance of a 48MP module - if you stick with 12MP. Because the 48MP JPEGs are not an alternative.
Normal focal length – 1.79/4.7 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 52 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
The main camera also takes over the zoom tasks, but does not show a good figure here. Once again, 12MP and 48 MP JPEGs are possible. Our rating is based on the 12MP recordings, but Poco achieves a higher quality level with the maximum resolution in a lot of light, admittedly without being able to match the performance of the wide-angle camera.
The 12MP JPEGs are calculated very clumsily and show strong artifacts in addition to low resolution even in high light. The pictures remain low-noise with decreasing light, but lose more and more fine details. Overall, the wide-angle camera is not convincing as a short telephoto.
Super wide angle – 2.2/1.6 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 16 mm), 8 MP sensor, JPEG with 8 MP
Xiaomi gets more out of the 8MP super-wide-angle on the Poco F3 than Sony. However, it is partly due to the harder signal tuning, which improves the sharpness impression. Overall, the Poco's super-wide images show the better drawing at all light levels. Even though the overall resolution is low - it is an 8MP sensor, after all - and the module doesn't come close to the best representatives of its kind, its images are okay in high light (5000 lux). In low light (200 Lux), they are then still usable, but already with severe limitations. At night (5 Lux), the quality degrades too much. click to enlarge
