Although the wide angle makes a positive impression, there stay too many “buts”: The partially very aggressive signal processing, the performance at night and the little convincing super wide angle module. However, in terms of pricing, the phone is attractive.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.9/5.43 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 25 mm), 64 MP sensor, JPEG with 16 or 64 MP
In bright light, the Redmi Note 9 Pro should definitely be used at maximum resolution – then the level of details stays higher, and the signal processing does not generate too many artefacts. Signal processing acts downright aggressive, both at the 64 megapixel as well as at the 16 megapixel setting, as soon as the light decreases. In the 16 MP images, it also produces unattractive artefacts, which degrade the image impression. With decreasing light, the image quality of the 64 MP JPEGs deteriorates faster. Even at slight darkening, the 16 MP images gain a little more details – they are also heavily enhanced, but still not quite as heavily as the higher resolution equivalents. At night, the imaging quality is just not convincing. But in spite of all criticism: This is still a very good wide angle module. Our assessment is based on the higher score count of the 16 MP solution.
Normal focal length – 1.9/5.43 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 56 mm), 64 MP sensor, JPEG with 16 MP
The wide angle does a less convincing job when used as a digital 2x zoom. Once again, the signal processing works excessively aggressive. The high contrast enhancements and the hard edges destroy the images even in bright light. We recommend to refrain from using the zoom. As this smartphone does not offer a tele lens, other than the Mi Note 10, this limits the possibilities of photographers.
Super wide angle – 2.2/1.65 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 13 mm), 8 MP sensor, JPEG with 8 MP
A resolution of only 8 MP and low Dead Leaves values: On the super wide angle images of the Redmi, even in bright light there is not really much to see. From the perspective of a photographer, this super wide angle lens is not worth using.
